Therapy for Young Adults

OUR SERVICES

Therapy for young adults at Bedrock Psychology Group is psychologist-led mental health care for adults ages 18-30 in Northbrook, IL and Chicago's North Shore suburbs, focused on the specific pressures of college, early career, identity, and the transition into adulthood.

The 20s are advertised as the best decade of your life. For most of the young adults we see, they don't feel that way. The pressure is real, the comparisons are constant, and the path everyone else seems to be walking looks nothing like the one in front of you.

This is a place to slow that down — to figure out what's actually working, what isn't, and what you want next, with a clinician who's done this work with a lot of people in your position.

Who we see

We work with young adults across the full range of life stages between 18 and 30 — college students managing the academic and social pressure of school, recent graduates figuring out who they are without the structure of a campus, 20-somethings navigating their first real career, returning home after college, breakups, friend-group shifts, and the slow realization that adulthood is a lot less defined than they were told it would be.
We see clients struggling with:

Anxiety — academic, social, generalized, panic. See our anxiety treatment page.
Depression — including the low-grade, hard-to-name version that's become normalized in this generation. See our depression therapy page.
ADHD — including late-diagnosed adults figuring out why college fell apart or why their first job feels impossible. See our ADHD treatment page.
Identity questions — career, relationship, religion, sexuality, family role.
Family-of-origin patterns — the dynamics you grew up in that are now showing up in adult relationships.
Relationship struggles — dating, friendships, early committed relationships, the loneliness underneath the social media presence.
Transitions — leaving home, returning home, finishing school, starting work, ending a relationship, moving cities.

We don't do generic talk therapy. We start by understanding what's actually going on — the patterns, the pressures, the moments that feel out of your hands — and from there we build a practical plan tailored to your life.

We draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety, depression, and the thought patterns that drive both, psychodynamic work for the deeper roots of why certain things keep happening, and solution-focused techniques for changes you can feel in weeks, not years.

Sessions are approxmimately 55 minutes. Most clients meet weekly. Some young adults come in for short-term work (12-20 sessions to address a specific problem) and others stay longer for deeper work. We'll build the cadence that fits what you need.

What therapy looks like for young adults

No one under 16. We work with adults ages 18 and up. We occasionally see 16-17 year olds on a case-by-case basis — contact us to discuss fit before booking.

No psychiatric medication. We're psychologists and clinicians — not prescribers. If medication is part of your plan, we coordinate with your prescriber but don't manage it ourselves.

No academic accommodations testing. If you need a formal evaluation for college disability services, ADA workplace accommodations, or insurance, you'll need a separate provider. We can refer.

We work with adults across every version of ADHD — high-achieving professionals who are tired of trying harder, parents who got their child's evaluation and started recognizing themselves on every page, late-diagnosed adults (especially women) who were missed for years, and anyone who's been white-knuckling daily life longer than they should have.

What we don't do

Bedrock is a psychologist-led practice. Our team has deep experience working with young adults across every version of this life stage — first-generation college students, kids of high-pressure households, late-diagnosed ADHD, recent graduates returning home, 20-somethings in their first real career crisis, and everyone in between.
You'll be matched with the clinician whose training and experience fits what you're bringing in.
In-network with BCBS PPO and Aetna. HSA/FSA accepted. Sliding scale available. We can also work with your parents' insurance if you're still on it.

Who you'll work with

Our Northbrook office is at 910 Skokie Blvd # 208, easily accessible from Deerfield, Highland Park, Glencoe, Wilmette, and Glenview. For young adults home from college on breaks or new graduates moving back to the area, we offer in-person sessions on whatever schedule fits.

Many of our young adult clients use telehealth — especially during the school year. We can see you across Illinois and 40+ PSYPACT states, which means you can keep the same therapist whether you're home in Northbrook for the summer or back at school in Boston, Madison, or Ann Arbor.

Common Questions About therapy for young adults

What if I don't know what's actually wrong?

Can I use my parents' insurance?

How long does therapy usually take?

Is what I tell you confidential from my parents?

My parents are pushing me to go to therapy. Does it work if I don't really want to be there?

You can — but most of our young adult clients prefer to keep one therapist year-round. PSYPACT lets us see you across 40+ states via telehealth, which means you can be in your dorm in Wisconsin or Michigan and still meet with your Bedrock clinician.

I'm a college student. Can I see you when I'm home and continue with another therapist when I'm at school?

It depends. Therapy works best when you want it, but the wanting often shows up after a few sessions, not before. The honest version: come in once or twice. If after that you genuinely don't want to be here, we'll respect that. Most young adults are surprised to find that having a space that isn't about their parents, their grades, or their relationship makes them want to come back.

Yes. If you're 18 or older, your treatment is fully confidential and nothing gets shared with your parents without your written permission, even if they're paying. For 16-17 year olds (when we see them), we discuss confidentiality structure clearly upfront with both you and your parents before starting.

It varies. Some clients come in for short-term work — 12-20 sessions to address something specific. Others stay longer to work on deeper patterns. We'll talk about what makes sense for you in the first session and check in regularly so you're not in therapy longer than you need to be.

While lifestyle changes and apps are helpful for organization, they often fail to address the core emotional regulation challenges that disrupt consistency. Many of our clients are already using every tool available but still feel overwhelmed by internal noise or the "shame cycle" of past failures. We provide the clinical oversight to help you understand why those systems fail during high-stress periods and how to build a more resilient emotional foundation that makes your other tools actually effective.
