At Bedrock Psychology Group, the specific brand of IQ test administered varies based on individual needs. We exclusively utilize "gold standard" tests, widely accepted and recognized across academic and psychological communities. These are the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, (WAIS), and the The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales. These tests are both standardized and normed, ensuring their reliability and accuracy through administration to thousands of individuals. This approach is in stark contrast to free online IQ tests, which typically lack scientific validation and may not yield accurate or dependable results.

IQ tests typically include a variety of questions designed to measure different aspects of intelligence. These questions generally assess both verbal and non-verbal skills, and they are structured to evaluate a range of cognitive abilities. Some activities on an IQ test are simple questions, some are puzzles, while others include memory tasks.

No. In fact, we discourage it. Studying for an IQ test in the traditional sense, is not typically effective because IQ tests are designed to assess your innate cognitive abilities, such as reasoning, problem-solving, and pattern recognition, rather than acquired knowledge. Furthermore, test results may be invalidated if a test-taker shows signs that explicit preparation was done. However, the best approach to prepare for an IQ test is to simply come to your appointment well rested and well fed.

The frequency with which you can take an IQ test depends on several factors, including the purpose of the test, the specific test being used, and your age. However, most standardized IQ tests have recommended retest intervals, often ranging from 6 months to a few years. This is to prevent practice effects, where familiarity with the test questions can artificially inflate scores and can lead to inaccurate measurements of your true cognitive abilities.

The average IQ for individuals, regardless of age, is designed to be around 100. IQ tests are normed so that the average score is set at 100, with a standard deviation usually around 15 points. This means that most people (about 68% of the population) will score within one standard deviation of the mean, which is between 85 and 115.

Bedrock Psychology Group exclusively conducts IQ testing in person, and it's likely that the gifted schools to which you may be applying have the same requirement. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, major test publishers offered guidelines and various alternatives for conducting assessments via "telehealth." However, this approach deviates from the standardized method of test administration and is generally advised against whenever feasible.

It's completely understandable to have concerns about how certain aspects of your past might impact your eligibility for adoption. It's important to be open and honest during the pre-adoption psychological evaluation. Revealing difficult parts of your past can actually be beneficial. It provides an opportunity to discuss any ongoing support you might need and shows your commitment to being the best parent possible. Ultimately, the goal of the evaluation is to ensure the best interests of the child. Demonstrating that you have learned from your past and are committed to providing a safe, loving, and stable home is key.
