Therapy for Older Adults

OUR SERVICES

Bedrock Psychology Group provides individual therapy for older adults navigating depression, grief, anxiety, life transitions, and retirement adjustment. Our doctoral-led clinical team in Northbrook, IL  offers personalized, evidence-based treatment tailored to each client — available in person at our Skokie Blvd office and via HIPAA-compliant telehealth throughout Illinois and beyond.

Later life brings its own distinct pressures. Retirement reshapes identity. Loss accumulates. Health changes. Relationships shift. These are not small adjustments — they are profound reorganizations of how a person understands themselves and their place in the world.

Therapy is not just for crisis. Many older adults seek support to process what they have been through, clarify what they want for the years ahead, and develop tools for managing what feels uncertain or out of their control.
At Bedrock, we do not use a one-size-fits-all approach. Treatment is built around your specific history, concerns, and goals.

Therapy Designed Around Where You Are in Life

Depression in later life often looks different than it does in younger people — it may present as fatigue, withdrawal, or a general flatness rather than overt sadness. It is also frequently undertreated. Our therapists provide individualized therapy to address depression at its source, not just its surface.

What We Treat:

Depression in Older Adults

Anxiety and Worry

Grief and Loss

Life Transitions and Retirement Adjustment

Older adults often carry compounding losses — of partners, peers, careers, physical ability, and independence. Grief does not follow a schedule. Therapy offers a structured, supportive space to process loss without having to minimize or rush through it.

Retirement can bring relief, but also disorientation. When identity has been tied to a career, stepping away from it raises real questions about purpose, structure, and meaning. Therapy supports clients through this transition and helps them build a life that feels genuinely satisfying — not just busy.

Health anxiety, fear of cognitive decline, worry about family members, and generalized anxiety are common and treatable. We help clients identify the patterns driving their anxiety and build concrete strategies to manage it.

Therapy at Bedrock is personalized to each client. Depending on your presenting concerns and what fits your way of working, your therapist may draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic approaches, or other evidence-based methods. The goal is not to apply a protocol — it is to understand you and build a course of treatment that is clinically sound and practically useful.

Our clinical team is led by doctoral-level clinicians licensed in Illinois. We are in-network with BCBS PPO.

Psychologists hold doctoral degrees (PsyD or PhD) and are trained to assess and treat complex mental health conditions, including those that commonly emerge in later life such as late-onset depression, complicated grief, and anxiety with medical comorbidities. At Bedrock, our clinical team is led by doctoral-level psychologists, allowing us to match each client with the clinician best suited to their needs.

While lifestyle changes and apps are helpful for organization, they often fail to address the core emotional regulation challenges that disrupt consistency. Many of our clients are already using every tool available but still feel overwhelmed by internal noise or the "shame cycle" of past failures. We provide the clinical oversight to help you understand why those systems fail during high-stress periods and how to build a more resilient emotional foundation that makes your other tools actually effective.

Common signs include withdrawal from activities they previously enjoyed, increased irritability or worry, difficulty adjusting to retirement or loss, changes in sleep or appetite, or expressions of hopelessness. If you are noticing these changes, a consultation with a doctoral-level clinician can help clarify whether therapy is appropriate and what the next steps look like. Bedrock Psychology Group works with older adults directly and can speak with family members during the intake process.
